Willy Rizzo sideboard double sided, burl wood, tinted mirror, chrome & black lacquer, 1970`s ca, Italian.

This sideboard has been thoroughly cleaned respecting the vintage patina and is ready to use.

The attributed designer of this double sided vintage sideboard is Willy Rizzo, whose furniture was sold by the luxury retailer Mario Sabot in Italy. This sideboard which was sourced from a private home in Rome and has the all the quality detailing & luxury materials characteristic of Rizzo’s work. In this case the use of rich precious wood & metals follow the lines of Rizzo`s popular ‘Alveo’ Range.

This modernist piece, from the late 70’s has design references from the earlier Art Deco style; burl wood veneer & black veneer both in a high polished finish. In addition there is chrome detailing and a plinth base.

This sideboard is double sided which gives many options; free standing in the room or along a wall. The Modernist form in luxury materials makes this piece fitting for a range of Interior Design schemes, such as Art Deco, Modernist, Hollywood Regency, Minimalist, 1970`s Glamour, Contemporary and Traditional.

The design plays with the combination of the cube & square surfaces. From a distance the piece has a simple sculptural geometric form.

At closer inspection, the playful design based on the square shape becomes evident. On the doors there is a patchwork checker pattern of burl wood veneer. The chrome detailing repeats these squares as cubes in the chrome trims along the piece at the top & bottom. The chrome lines also make a geometric contrast with the square black gloss lacquer surfaces on the sides. Inside the sideboard, the compartments are cubes.

Another detail of the inside compartments is that they protrude slightly. The polished lacquer wood frames is in contact with the doors. Next to this is the black lacquer external sides. The result is a sense of depth.

The 6 doors have a checker pattern of burl wood. The unique pattern of burl wood comes from rare & deviated tree growth. This veneer is highly prized for its beauty and therefore sought after by furniture makers. The veneer is cleverly set to contrast the direction of the grain & golden tone. The edge of the doors is also veneered and slightly curved to keep the form soft.

Inside the sideboard there are 3 compartments. These are in high polished lacquer veneer stained to match the doors. The hinges of the doors allow the doors to be easily positioned. Inside each compartment there is a removable shelf which is also veneered & polished on all sides.

The external frame is finished in gloss black lacquer with polished chrome detailing. Contrasting with the rick textured dark wood & black, the chrome keeps the piece `light` and modern.

Two chrome trim `pillars` run vertically at the sides & horizontally at the top. Where these intersect a square shape is created thus repeating the square design theme of the entire piece. The chrome trim is also subtly finished with a tiny cube in each corner.

On the top surface, there is the original bronze tinted mirror adding glamour and lightness to the piece. This mirror is inset and framed within the same chrome trim and it is removable.

The entire sideboard sits on a short pedestal base in black laminate. This is recessed to give the appearance that the sideboard is floating.

This vintage sideboard is in very good condition. The lacquer surfaces & chrome parts are in very good condition with only a few tiny superficial lines as expected for its age. The vintage bronze mirror top is in very good condition with no chips and only minor superficial wear in line with age.

Packing is offered free of charge. The doors & inside shelves are removable and would be wrapped & boxed separately for safe travel. The frame would be wrapped in light foam & bubble wrap and if necessary a second layer of card.
