Pair of Maison Charles style table lamps, bronze with onyx plinths, 1940`s ca, French.
This pair of table lamps have been gently cleaned while respecting the vintage patina. They are newly rewired & earthed, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to use. Each has a new porcelain/brass lamp holder, gold tone silk cable, new black cord switch & a new black plug. These lamps can be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use these lights in other countries with a light bulb suitable to local electricity.
These vintage table lamps were probably made by French Company Maison Charles. They are in keeping with Maison Charles’ quality and detail. They have several distinctive design features: the combination of Regency & Neoclassical styles, elegant proportions, luxury materials, quality casting & heavy weight.
These lamps have a slender form which is well suited for the bedside or corridor. With the luxurious materials & sculptural presence, these lamps would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Traditional, Hollywood Regency, Post Modern, Industrial or Contemporary.
The design consist of a octagonal column in polished bronze. Each of the eight sides is scalloped which softens the design. This column leads to a narrower section terminating with a flat plate on which the lampholder sits. This is inside a polished brass lampholder cover.
Looking towards the bottom the column wideness to a bulbous form. This creates interesting reflections. At the very bottom the plinth in bronze supports an onyx square portion of swirling cream & brown tones.
Both lamps are finished with a new clip-on black silk lampshade. This is lined metallic gold to complement the gilt bronze tones on the lamp.
Underneath each lamp base is padded with new black felt to protect the furniture below.
Each lamp carries 1 standard small screw light bulb (E14) up to 40 Watts. At present they are fitted & photographed with Candle Clear shaped light bulbs of 25 Watts. These are included in the price.
These vintage lamps are in very good condition. The onyx surfaces are in very good condition with no chips or cracks; there is some patina & tiny marks in line with age. The bronze surfaces have the original clear lacquer present, with a nice warm antique patina
& tiny marks in line with age
, adding character.
Packing is offered free of charge. We take special professional care while packing. For safe transport the bases & lampshades would be wrapped separately in bubble wrap, foam and an outer layer of card. Together these parts would easily fit into a box with loose fill packing nuts, safe for posting with a courier.

THE USE OF ONYX IN FURNITURE HISTORY
The use of onyx in
furnishings
is particularly interesting & romantic. Ancient Indian and Persian refer to onyx
as a protector from evil. The Indian gemologists describe onyx as a protector for harmonious relationships. Apparently the close union and yet strong contrast between the layers of black and white are symbolizing for the love between two people.
