Bouillotte table lamp, attributed to Maison Charles, brass & gilt metal frame, 1940`s ca, French.

This vintage table lamp has been gently cleaned while preserving the aged patina. It is newly rewired, earthed, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to use. It has the following new components: cream card covers, gold silk cable, white cord switch & white plug (UK Plug up to 250V). This lamp could be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use this light in other countries with light bulbs suitable to local electricity.

This Modernist interpretation of the traditional metal bouillotte lamp is attributed to Maison Charles of Paris. It has several design features typical of Maison Charles: the combination of Regency & Neoclassical styles simplified in a Modernist design, elegant proportions, luxury materials, crisp casting and heavy weight. This design is classic, timeless & decorative.

The traditional Bouillotte lamp was the center piece of the 18th century French gambling card game, Bouillotte, a predecessor to modern day Poker. The Bouillotte lamp is characterized by several candlesticks and a wide lampshade usually of metal tole.

This Mid-century Bouillotte lamp would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Art Deco, Traditional, Hollywood Regency, Post Modern, Industrial or Contemporary.

This design from the bottom consists of a gilt metal round base with scalloped edge on 3 claw feet. The centre is in black enamel. The base is weighted & stable.

From the base rises a polished brass central column. At a brass cluster body are 3 brass tubular arms, spreading out & upwards like a candelabra. Each arm finishes at the end with a lamp holder, covered by a removable new cream card candle cover. The lamp holders sit on a brass bobeche with a decorative scalloped pattern. The bottom of the bobeche has another geometric decoration.

The central column continues upwards in a fluted thinner tubular section, supporting the lampshade at the top of the frame. The shade is original to the piece. It is a shallow drum shape in beige silk fabric with velvet trim and lined. There is a decorative solid brass finial & two metal washers holding the shade in place.

This table lamp carries 3 standard small screw light bulbs (E14) up to 40 Watts each. At present fitted & photographed with Candle Clear shaped light bulbs of 25 Watts, which are included in the price. This lamp could take other E14 lightbulb shapes.

This vintage lamp is in very good condition for its age. The frame is sound with no damages or missing parts. The brass surfaces have the original clear lacquer present, with a nice patina & minor marks in line with age. The lampshade is in good condition, the frame of which is sturdy. The fabric & lining have some rubbing & minor marks but no cuts.

Additional dimensions:

The total Height (to top finial) with the shades on is: 50 cm.

FRENCH BOUILLOTTE LAMP HISTORY

The Bouillotte lamp is characterized by one or several candlesticks and became popular as it was used while playing the 18th century French gambling card game, Bouillotte.

A bouillotte table lamp, often made of brass, characterised of multiple candle or lamp holders similar to a candelabra from a rounded base. Capping these lights there is the iconic lacquered metal tôle shade that could accommodate the heat of the burning candles illuminated beneath it. These shades were typically opaque on the exterior but highly reflective on the interior to augment the light provided to the players around the table. Often the lampshade was mounted on an adjustable slide; with the turn of a key, the tôle shade could be easily raised to insert new candles, or lowered to better focus the light of the flickering flames of a dwindling candle.
