Which iconic 70′s sofas were inspired by Joe DiMaggio & Marilyn Monroe?

Added 04 January 2012 at 21:02

Charles Eames, said he designed his classic 50′s armchair to welcome the body like a well-used baseball glove.

The 1971 ‘Joe’ sofa was a literal response to Eames by Italian architects Gionatan De Pas, Donato D’Urbino and Paolo Lomazzi.

The ‘Joe’ sofa was named for New York Yankees Joe DiMaggio who was once married to Marilyn Monroe, herself the inspiration for the 1970 Bocca sofa.

‘Joe’, like these chairs, is made from pre-formed expanded polyurethane foam which allowed for new 70′s shapes.

‘Joe’ has been manufactured by Poltronova since 1971. Forover 50 years this company, based in Tuscani, has been using innovated materials & technologies.

Organic and humorousshapes were a response to the modernism of Bauhaus. As well, the work of sculptorClaus Oldenburgwho made large scale replicas of modern day objects were innovative and yet to be brought ‘home’.
