Vintage mid-century Florentine ceramic table lamp by MAF (Manifattura Artistica Fiorentina),1950`s ca, Italian.

This vintage lamp has been gently cleaned while respecting the aged patina. It is newly rewired, earthed, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to use. It has the following new components: brass lamp holder with 2 shade rings, gold silk cable, white cord switch, white plug (UK Plug up to 250V) & fabric lampshade. Lightbulb included. This lamp can be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use this light in other countries with a light bulb suitable to local electricity.

Presented here is a mid-century handmade ceramic table lamp by MAF ITALY, signed at the bottom "CX 9563 FOREIGN`, showing the artist initials & model number, plus the word foreign meaning the lamp was originally exported from Italy to retailers in the United Kingdom, or Neiman Marcus in the United States, as an "exclusive" line.

The sculptural form, bold colours & size make this lamp well proportioned for a side table, bedside, console, desk or sideboard. They would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Art Deco, Traditional, Country, Hollywood Regency, or Contemporary.

This one off & unique lamp features a distinctive, playful shape combining functional form with decorative art. The base is hand crafted from glossy glazed ceramic, featuring a short, rounded stem in a crackle turquoise/green finish leading up to a small, flat, white circular section that mimics a miniature dining table. This "tabletop" is detailed with hand painted applied miniature ceramic items like bottles, glasses, cutlery, food and plates, and a red and yellow scalloped edge trim. All evoking a typical Italian "al fresco" (outdoors) pleasant summer meal,  which is a characteristic of whimsical Italian pottery design from that era.

Rising from the center of the table is a slender solid brass column leading to the new quality solid brass lamp holder with two removable brass rings to secure the lampshade in place.

The lamp is finished with a new tapered drum linen fabric lampshade that complements the playful design of the base, with bold stripes in a caramel & cream tone, lined in white fabric. The shade has reversible gimbal internal arms to change the angle of the shade. It can take a maximum of 10 Watts LED bulb (equivalent of 60 Watts). This lampshade is included in the price.

Carries 1 standard small screw light bulb (E14) up to 60 Watts. At present fitted & photographed with a new LED 4.5 Watt dimmable Candle Clear shaped light bulb (equivalent of 40 Watts), included in the price.

This vintage lamp is in very good condition for its age. The vintage patina has been preserved. The ceramic base is all sound with no damages, missing or broken parts. The metal surfaces in good condition with minor subtle superficial marks, adding character & depth, all in line with age & wear. The lampshade is new and in very good condition.

M.A.F. ITALY (Manifattura Artistica Fiorentina) HISTORY

M.A.F  (Manifattura Artistica Fiorentina)   was an Italian ceramic manufacturing company located near Florence. Antonio Miracapillo was the artisan and likely the founder or principal behind the operation. It was known for its polychrome thin glazed earthenware, often in whimsical or figural designs, including "circus" style, hand painted, vibrant & colourful.
The company was a workplace for several key artists in the mid 20th Century. It followed the tradition of Italian Maiolica and probably resurfaced with new strengths after War World II. In the mid 1950`s, several former M.A.F. artists, including the poet Alberto Caverni and the painters Bruno Brunetti and Mario Nuti, left the company to establish their own competing ceramic manufactory called "La Cava" in 1956. This suggests that M.A.F. played a significant foundational role in the local post-war Florentine ceramic art scene. M.A.F. ceramics are identified by a back stamp on the base, typically reading "M.A.F. Italy" along with a model number. For items exported abroad and sold by other retailers such as Neiman Marcus in the United States, the signature `M.A.F Italy` was often replaced with just the model number and the word `Foreign`; each retailer will add their own name or paper labels. Pieces are highly collectible today as all were handmade and one off pieces.
