Shaker Elder`s chair, a pair, maple frame with woven seats, 2003 English.
These chairs have been gently cleaned while respecting the vintage patina and are ready to use.
The design of this chair is based on the antique Shaker Elder`s ladder back Chair. This pair was made in 2003 by `Shaker of Malvern, UK`, and retailed in London by `Shaker Limited`. The original label is present under each seat. The `Shaker of Malvern` Company is related to the `Shaker Workshops` in Massachusetts, USA.
Shaker furniture is admired worldwide for its simplicity, innovative joinery, quality, and functionality. It beautifully expresses the harmony and order that the Shakers sought in every aspect of their lives. Its clear crisp lines, strength and singular lightness make these chairs suitable for modern and traditional interiors. Shaker ladder back chairs deeply influenced the work of the Postwar Danish designers.
With its generous proportions and stately lines, this classic Shaker armchair is exceptionally comfortable. The slender finials on the rear posts and the ‘mushroom’ turnings on the armrests are copied in precise detail from the antique Shaker chair. The early American original was made at the Mt. Lebanon New York Shaker community in the 1860`s.
The frame is hard maple with a hand-rubbed Oil & Wax Finish, a centuries-old polish known to the Shaker furniture makers themselves. The manufacturer used a blend made by Odies Oil which is an all-natural oil and wax that is non-toxic both in use and finish. It hardens and achieves an even greater luster over time and is highly resistant to stains & moisture.
The woven seat is in Indian red/rust colour chair tape in a checkerboard pattern.
Each chair has the original maker`s stamp inside one leg as photographed.

Both chairs are in very good vintage condition. The frames are sound and in excellent condition with the original finish present and hardly any superficial marks. The woven seats are the original vintage ones and in good condition with no loses. There is some light discoloration in the material and marks in line with age & wear.

Packing is offered free of charge. We take special professional care while packing. Each chair would be individually packed with bubble wrap, foam and cardboard, and sealed with a layer of stretch wrap for safe transport. They could be boxed with loose fill packing nuts, safe for shipping with a courier.
SHAKERS WORKSHOPS HISTORY
Shaker Workshops was founded in 1970 in Massachusetts with the purpose of reproducing original Shaker furniture as faithfully as possible. To this day,Shaker Workshops furniture is produced by skilled craftspeople from throughout New England. In the fall of 2019, the business relocated to Sandwich, New Hampshire where production continues under the stewardship of the Tappan Chair Company, itself a 200 year old New England furniture making business.
SHAKER OF MALVERN HISTORY
The business started in 1985 in the UK, when Alan Eldridge began making contemporary furniture. Later since 1997 they began making Shaker furniture.
SHAKER FURNITURE HISTORY
The Shakers came to USA from England in 1774, and by 1850 grew from a membership of nine to approximately 6,000 in villages throughout the eastern and central United States. Today, membership is small again, but this does not take away from the lasting mark that generations have made on the American heritage. Shaker furniture has been a major creative force in American decorative arts heritage because it is the one truly original American style of furniture.
The Shakers as a religious group, had guiding principles of simplicity, utility and honesty. Their beliefs were reflected in the well-made furniture of minimalist designs.
Furniture was made thoughtfully, with functional form & proportion. Rather than using ornamentation, such as inlays, carvings, metal pulls, or veneers, which seens as prideful or deceitful, they developed "creative solutions such as asymmetrical drawer arrangements and multipurpose forms to add visual interest." Furniture was made of cherry, maple or pine lumber, generally stained or painted with one of the colours which were dictated by the sect, typically blue, red, yellow or green.
A core business for the New Lebanon Shaker community by the 1860`s was the production of well-made ladder-back or turned post chairs.
