Sciolari brass chandelier, particularly large with 18 lights, 1970`s ca, Italian.
Thoroughly cleaned respecting the antique patina, newly rewired,
in full working order and ready to install. Light bulbs included.
This Modernist sculptural chandelier is Gaetano Sciolari`s Minimalist re-interpretation of a traditional design. It is one of his most sought after designs; one as large as this and in solid brass is very rare to find.
The solid tubular brass frame is finished in a polished brass tone which adds luxury to the geometric sculptural form. The minimal shape, a stripped back version of the traditional chandelier, in this gold tone works very well and is timeless. This design would suit a wide range of interiors such as Minimal, Modern, Antique, Art Deco or Hollywood Regency.
The sculptural composition is an elegant assemblage of 12 elongated arms; each finished alternating with either 2 lights or a single light, for a total of 18 lights.
From a central brass column at the top of the piece, fall 6 brass arched tubes held together at the bottom in a brass `wheel-shaped` pattern. At this point an arm extends outwards from the vertical tube. These 6 arms have 2
lamp holders at different levels.
Between each of these 6 arms, there are 6 more arms with only 1 lamp holder each. There are 18 lights in total.
Two solid polished brass horizontal surfaces join the vertical tubular rods in each arm. The external one is slightly shorter than the central one thereby creating two inverted tiers with depth and interesting reflections. Alternating verticals rods stand like
stalagmites in true Brutalist fashion.
The centre portion of the chandelier has two round brass covers with a decorative cylinder brass nut at both the top & bottom.
All the lamp holders have the original vintage removable cylinder gilded covers.
This piece takes 18 standard small screw light bulbs (E14) up to 40 Watts each. Presently fitted & photographed with Pygmy shaped clear light bulbs of 15 Watts, which are widely available in lighting shops or the internet. Alternatively it is possible to use other bulb shapes such as candle shape or golf, for a classical look.
At the top of the piece, the frame`s tubular portion has inside an S hook for hanging from the ceiling. Covering this there is a brass ceiling cup. This piece could be easily adapted to hang on a brass chain if extra length is needed.
This chandelier is in very good condition with the original antique patina on the brass, particular on the top flat surfaces. The lamp holder gilded covers have some patina & rubbing of the gilt in line with age.
Gaetano Sciolari Biography
While Sciolari Lighting has been around since 1892, it was their most famous offspring Gaetano Sciolari who went on to design for Italian manufacturer Stilnovo in the 1950’s. Sciolari`s first designs were Atom inspired pendants, but in the 60’s he shifted to conventional chandelier forms. Read more on our
