Pierre Vandel Furniture History

Added 04 June 2017 at 16:12

Pierre Vandel is a talented French designer whose success is international. His avant-garde vision, innovative spirit and rigor pushed him to design original, elegant & timeless furniture.

Pierre Vandel was born 1939 in Roubaix in France. He obtains a CAP of industrial design & fitting. He then joined the engineering department of Ponts et Chaussées and studied at CNAM (Arts et Métiers). Bursting with ideas, he tested several projects like a vertical aquarium. While with the company he also designed hi-fi furniture, side tables, lighting.

In 1969, Vandel founded his own studio and soon developed a partnership with Pierre Cardin. His `Vertèbre` chair from 1972 is an iconic 20th century piece.

Vandel has received 2 Oscars for export from the French Ministry of Industry.  Cardin supported him to create his own brand, Pierre Vandel - Paris, and then introduced him to French high society, who embrace his creations.

He is best known for his angular tables, which reflect the glamorous & minimalist aesthetics dominating furniture and lighting design in France in the 1970s. Like this pair of large square side/coffee tables on the left, arrived recently in stock at Roomscape.

The double interlocking frames, repeated geometric details, bevelled glass and satin golden tone keep the Modernist design elegant & chic.  Each frame is divided into its core parts in the Constructivist manner.

Pierre Vandel Hollywood Regency designs include tables, desks, shelving, all made up of aluminium, lacquered wood or Lucite with brass details and various quality glass table tops.

His creations were made apart from France in countries such as Argentina, Australia & Canada.
