Peter Ghyczy was born in 1940 Budapest. He studied architecture with an industrial design background at the Polytechnic University Aachen.
After the Hungarian revolution Peter Ghyczy immigrated to West-Germany. With a degree in architecture, he started to work for plastics producer Reuter in Lemförde. In 1968, as a head of design department at Reuter, he aimed to design "independent and unique pieces of furniture". His most famous product of that period is the 1968 garden egg chair. This extraordinary chair gained iconic status and was being exposed at many design exhibitions around the world.
In 1971 he founded The Ghyczy company in the The Netherlands designing made to order furniture. His independent collection was based on casting techniques which he transferred from plastics to metal. He patented many of his developments, especially for his innovative method of clamping glass and metal together. He used this technique for a new type of "frameless" table.
Construction & clarity are fundamental to the design executed with quality casting & iconic clamping techniques.
Ghyczy collaborates with local craftsmen to produce individual bespoke pieces which are also sculptures for the home.
The company is active today with son Felix on board as partner. Each piece is unique and with a background story in both design & production making them antiques of the future.
