Pair Art Deco style koi fish candlesticks, gilt bronze & verdigris, 1950`s ca, French.
These vintage candlesticks have been gently cleaned while respecting the aged patina. They are ready to use. Two new pillar candles included.
This design is classic, timeless and decorative. With the fish theme and strong sculptural presence it would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Art Deco, Traditional, Hollywood Regency, Post Modern, Industrial or Contemporary.
Each candlestick is made of solid patinated bronze with a verdigris finish & gold gilt accents. They have a good weight and are very stable. Art Deco references are present in the exotic design, such as the curvy geometric pattern of the fish, the repetitive use of the circle combined with the swirling movement of the water waves.
The design consists of a stem with a tropical fish surrounded by scrolling waves & sea life. Each figure is individually quality cast with great attention to detail.
The use of the circle in the composition is present in the air bubbles & the top drip pan, which has a subtle scalloped edge simulating a water flower. The pistil becomes the pin to secure the candle. Accents of gold gilt are present around the trim.
The fish sculpture sits on an oversized decorative gold gilt bronze ball.
The round base underneath is pierced and quality cast featuring plants & sea life: a lobster, a sea horse, a crab & a tropical fish.
These candlesticks sell together and the price is for the pair. Two new beige pillar candles are included in the sale.
Both candlesticks are in very good condition for its age, with a light warm antique patina and minor superficial marks in line with age & wear. The metal sculptures are sound.

Packing is offered free of charge. We take special professional care while packing. For safe transport each candlestick would be wrapped separately in bubble wrap, foam and an outer layer of card. THE KOI FISH THEME IN ART DECO & MYTHOLOGY
The fish theme in furniture & decorative arts has been used regularly over the years in France since the 19th Century.
Koi fish has become a famous symbol of beauty, love, and prosperity throughout the world.
In early 20th Century French artists drew inspiration from distant lands. “Art Deco” was a new wave in visual art that first appeared in France shortly after World War I. The style was influenced by ideas and exotic imagery borrowed from Africa and Asia, but also from the Greek Revival style of the 19th Century.
