Pair Art Deco bookends elephants, attributed to Gallot, unsigned, patinated spelter & marble, 1930`s ca, French.

These items have been gently cleaned while respecting the vintage patina. They are ready to use.

Although these sculptures are not signed, they were probably made by Gallot France.

Each bookend is made in solid patinated spelter with a warm antique bronze gilt finish. They have a good weight, each figure is individually quality cast depicting a trumpeting elephant. Art Deco references are present in the exotic design, such as the curvy geometric pattern of the elephant drapes.

The rectangular bases under the elephant sculpture are in solid polished veined marble, in tones of brown & terracotta, with an elegant angled plinth around. New black felt is present underneath each base to protect the surfaces below.

These bookends sell together and the price is for the pair. The books are for display only and not included in the sale.

Both bookends are in very good condition for its age, with a light warm antique patina and minor marks in line with age & wear. The metal sculptures are sound. The marble bases are both in good condition with no chips or cracks, and only a very tiny restoration in one base lower corner.

Packing is offered free of charge. We take special professional care while packing. For safe transport each bookend would be wrapped separately in bubble wrap and an outer layer of card. These would be stacked together and boxed with loose fill packing nuts, safe for posting with a courier.

THE ELEPHANT THEME IN ART DECO & MYTHOLOGY

In the early 20th Century French artists drew inspiration from distant lands. “Art Deco” was a new wave in visual art that first appeared in France shortly after World War I. The style was influenced by ideas and exotic imagery borrowed from Africa and Asia.

The elephant is considered a divine being in the Hindu Mythology of India. It is a symbol of royalty and majesty in the traditional Indian culture as well.
