Vintage square large coffee table attributed to Karl Springer, 1980`s ca, USA. Neoclassical inspired with the combination of quality materials. Metal lacquered tubular frame in beige gloss with brass details. The central stretcher strengthens the piece and adds to the design. Removable clear glass. Very good condition with attractive patina consistent with age, giving character. Good proportions and appealing large size.
Karl Springer (1930 – 1991) was originally from Berlin and trained in Paris. In the early 60`s he established a furniture workshop in Manhattan. Taking inspiration from classical designs, Karl Springer created custom-made furniture. His signature styles were Art Deco, classical Chinese and Bauhaus.
Springer demanded the highest level of materials and workmanship; using wood, lucite and metals. Originally a bookbinder, Springer re-introduced covering furniture with sharkskin.
By the 80`s there were Karl Springer Showrooms in New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Munich and Chicago. Collectors include The Duke & Duchess of Windsor, Frank Sinatra, Jacqueline Onassis, Joni Mitchell and Luther Vandross.
