Guglielmo Ulrich chandelier for F.I.L.C Milano, Art Deco golden tone, large 12 lights, 1930`s ca, Italian.
This chandelier has been gently cleaned while respecting the vintage patina. It is newly rewired & earthed with gold silk cable, fully working, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to install. Light bulbs included. This chandelier can be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use this chandelier in other countries although it may be necessary to purchase different light bulbs suitable to local electricity.
This large chandelier is in the majestic Art Deco & Modernist style characteristic of Guglielmo Ulrich, the attributed designer. Several similar examples are featured in the book `Guglielmo Ulrich` by Luca Scacchetti, Federico Motta Editore Italy 2009. This piece also has the original maker`s label: "F.I.L.C" Milano Marchio Depositato.
In this design the traditional chandelier is pared down with Modernist & Futuristic influences. Features such as the swag & scroll form, and the decorative bottom finial, are kept simple for a clean look. This design would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Art Deco, Traditional, Hollywood Regency, Post Modern, or Contemporary.
The Neoclassical inspired rectangular frame consists of a main cylindrical receiver bowl from which depart 4 arms of rectangular section. Two of the arms are longer, creating an elongated rectangular shape. This would make it ideal for a big room or above a dining table.
Each of these arms finishes at the end with 3 scrolling arms, in a ribbon like shape. The 2 side arms extend upwards while the central arm curves downwards. The result is a sense of movement & lightness to the piece.
On top of each arm there is a lamp holder. In total there are 12 lamp holders for 12 lights. Each lamp holder has a candle cup & round bobeche from which elevates the candle tube. These candle tubes are tall & narrow, adding elegance and balancing to the design. The candle tubes are removable for easy transport & cleaning.
This chandelier is finished with new clip-on black silk lampshades. Each lampshade has a black fabric trim and metallic gold lining. This chandelier could be used without the shades for a more minimal look if preferred.
On top of the main receiver area of the frame, there is a wider tubular rod balancing the design vertically and finishing at the top in a narrow removable rod. This hanging rod unscrews from the top of the frame, and can be changed, shortened or replaced with a chain if needed. At the top of the rod there is an S hook to fit the piece to the ceiling, together with a removable decorative ceiling cup to cover this hook.
This vintage chandelier is a gold tone gilt on a white metal. This appears to match other chandeliers attributed to Guglielmo Ulrich. This was a popular finish in the early 20th Century for a light & sleek look. The surfaces also have a combination of finishes: a polished finish in the arms, the narrow top portion of the rod, the bobeches and the bottom finial; and a satin finish in the main tubular rod, the removable candle tubes and the banding along the receiver bowl.
The chandelier carries 12 standard small screw light bulbs E14 up to 40 Watts each. At present fitted & photographed with Candle Clear shaped light bulbs of 25 Watts. These are included in the price.
The frame is quality cast with good weight. The metal is in very good condition, with a light patina & minor marks in line with age. The lampshades are new.

The height of the main frame without the narrow top rod (unscrewed) is: 59 cm.
The height of the narrow removable top rod alone is: 46 cm.
Each lampshade alone has the following dimensions: Height: 9.5 cm, Diameter at the bottom: 14 cm, Diameter at the top: 7 cm.
Packing is offered free of charge. We take special professional care with packing. For safe transport the shades will be wrapped separately in bubble wrap and an outer layer of card. These will be stacked together. The frame will also be wrapped separately in bubble wrap & card. The rod could be unscrewed if necessary. Together these pieces would easily fit into a box with loose fill packing suitable for posting with a courier.
GUGLIELMO ULRICH HISTORY
Guglielmo Ulrich (Italy, 1904 - 1977) was born in Milan, to a notable Danish family. He worked as an architect, designer and painter. His work played a formative role in what we called today `The Italian Style`.
In his book `Guglielmo Ulrich`, Luca Scacchetti described Milan at that time was `the Italian laboratory of Modernity`, creating a new basis for the Neoclassical style at the beginning of the 20th Century. Scacchetti describes Ulrich as a mirror of a changing culture, reflecting a more measured and elegant world where a balance was struck between quality and good taste.
Ulrich was admired by his contemporaries, in particular by Gio Ponti, a fellow architect & designer in Milan. Ulrich became a master of combining indulgence and refinement with functionality and modernity, blending beauty and practicality in all his designs & vintage pieces, highly sought after in Interior Decoration today.
