Gae Aulenti vintage Jumbo marble coffee table for Knoll,1965, Italy.  Though this design is still produced by Knoll, our table is an original 1960`s vintage piece with a great antique patina adding character and decorative effect.  Polished marble in a warm shade of elegant light coral colour with beige, white & grey veins.  The square top sits on four solid sculpted marble column legs. Good size coffee table with nice proportions. The light colour marble keeps this piece looking light and complements any style of decor.  The top was originally coated with transparent  polyester to protect from staining. The top surface can be separated from the four individual legs for transport. Very good condition all around without chips or any major scratches to the marble.

This table is featured on page 209 in `Repertorio del Design Italiano per l`arredamento domestico 1950-1980` by Giuliana Gramigna, published by Umberto Allemandi & C.

Gae Aulenti graduated from the Milan Polytechnic in 1954 to become one of Italy`s most recognized Architects. It was while working as a graphic designer with Casabella Magazine when she joined her colleagues to form the Neo Liberty movement in Italy. Rejecting the architecture of Bauhaus modernism, the Neo Liberty group returned to local building traditions and individual expression. While historic towns around Italy were about to be wrecked as part of the Modernist agenda, the Neo Liberty movement responded to this anti-historical Rationalism. Furniture was designed to be coherent with the materials such as this marble Jumbo coffee table from 1965 which is carved with classical pillars. In the 1980’s Aulenti completed her most famous project, the Musée d`Orsay in Paris, demonstrating the past can successfully mix with the present.
