Deer lamp, a pair of Black Forest carvings by Rhön Sepp 1940`s ca, German.

This pair of table lamps have been gently cleaned while respecting the vintage patina. Both are newly rewired & earthed, fully working and PAT tested by an electrician. Each has a new earthed lamp holder, brass & black touch switch, gold tone silk cable & new black plug. Light bulbs included. It is possible to use these lights in other countries although it may be necessary to purchase different light bulbs suitable to local electricity.

Quality carved, these lamps have character and would be a welcome addition to a room with a rustic decor, hotel or bar.

Historically Black Forest carvings are from walnut as is likely the base of these lamps. At the focal point is a deer head upright in calling with glass eyes & stag horns of resin. He stands majestically on textured ` terrain`. Rising from the centre is a textured `tree` with `follage`.

From the carved wood base a solid brass central column continues to the brass lamp holder & cover. There is an attachment for an American style lamp shade including a harp & decorative final. At the top of this the vintage lampshade screws in place. The shade is pagoda shaped burgundy silk with `leatherette` trim & gold lining.

Each lamp takes a standard small screw light bulb E14 up to 60 Watts each. Presently fitted and photographed with clear candle shaped light bulbs of 25 Watts. Alternatively it is possible to use any other E14 light bulb shapes.

These large vintage table lamps are in very good condition with the original maker`s label. There is some rubbing to the horns. The brass & wood have the original vintage patina in line with age. The lampshades are in good condition for the age with rubbing in places but no cuts or rips. On the underside of each base there are two stickers `Rhön Sepp Qualitätsmarke` & ` Made in Germany`.

Packing is offered free of charge. We take special professional care while packing. For safe transport the lamp shades would be wrapped separately in bubble wrap & card. The wood bases would be wrapped similarly. Together these parts would fit in a box ideal for shipping with a courier.

Additional dimensions -

Each base alone has a Height of 73 cm, maximum width of 28 cm and depth of 20 cm.

Each shade along has a Height of 30.5 cm, maximum width of 36 cm and depth of 36 cm.

BLACK FOREST CARVINGS

Black Forest carvings usually depict forest animals, particularly bears, and foliage. A common misconception is that they originate from the Bavarian Black Forest of southwestern Germany, but it has in fact been established that they are the creation of Swiss carvers, originating in the town of Brienz. From humble beginnings of a cottage industry in the early 1800s it grew by the turn of the 20th century to become the major employer of an entire skilled community.

Black Forest carvings are often humorous and whimsical such as bears smoking pipes, reading books, or skiing. The carvings were exhibited at many international exhibitions such as London Great Exhibition of 1851, Chicago World’s Fair 1893, and Exposition Universelle Paris 1900. In Europe, they became a symbol of luxury and wealth as the Victorian travelers on the `Grand Tour` ventured into the alps.
