CARLOS SOBRAL BIOGRAPHY

Carlos Sobral was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1950. Initially worked in leather & metal. In the mid 70`s he came across polyester resin at the Cabo Frio Craft Fair in the outskirts of Rio. This would lead to him setting up a small resin factory called `Genesis` in 1978, which he would rename with the Post-Modern title `Memphis` in 1981. A year later Sobral travelled to Paris with his first collection for Europe, which would eventually lead to a retail store on the Île Saint-Louis. He would later on open stores in the Brazilian cities of Paraty, Rio de Janeiro & São Paulo, as well as New York.

At the Parisian BIJORHCA Designer Jewellery Show, Sobral has received the famous "Etoile de Mode" Award four times and `Best in Show` in 2006. In the USA, his pieces can be found in the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Museum, the Newark Museum and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

In Pop culture Sobral Jewellery is featured on Beyonce`s video “Put it in a love song” (photographed) and Oprah Winfrey`s May 2006 magazine of `best shopping`. Sobral also collaborated with Karl Lagerfeld.

As a "green" company, Sobral uses recycled materials, including all the raw material he consumed in production. The international recognition of his work took place in New York at the Global Fashion Awards, WGSM, in 2010, when Sobral received the award of one of the three most environmentally friendly companies in the world.
