Beswick ceramic dog table lamp of a  Yorkshire Terrier standing on books, 1930`s ca English.

This vintage lamp has been gently cleaned while respecting the aged patina. It is newly rewired, earthed, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to use. It has the following new components: brass lamp holder & cover, golden silk cable, black cord switch and black plug. This lamp could be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use this lamp in other countries with a light bulb suitable to local electricity.

This vintage table lamp was probably made by the English Company Beswick. It shows many design features: the dog theme, a quality figurine depicted with realism, good colour & glaze. The Terrier dog was popular in the early 20th Century, and was represented in many paintings and decorations for the home.

With its cute animal theme in the Art Deco style and medium size proportions, this light would work well on a side table, desk, or sideboard. It would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Country, Traditional, Hollywood Regency, Art Deco, or Contemporary.

The composition consists of four parts: a ceramic figurine of a Yorkshire Terrier dog standing sideways on two ceramic books. Behind the figurine there is a black bulbous column in a slight angle that raises from the books leading to the lamp holder.

Looking in detail, the ceramic Yorkshire Terrier dog is in tones of brown & beige, it has white paws, painted eyes and perky brown ears & tail. The paint effect gives texture and is finished in gloss. The `books` making up the base are glossy black with painted brown `book corners` and the side pages painted a gold matte gilt.

From the back the figurine is as well detailed as the front. Cleverly the silk cable comes out from a discrete hole in the column.

Underneath the lamp base is padded with new black felt to protect the furniture below.

At the top of the column sits a brass neck leading to a new brass lamp holder & polished brass cover. The lamp shade is secured in place by two brass rings that screw to the lamp holder.

Finished with a vintage Pagoda lampshade of later date. This is in a gold tone fabric with scalloped edge outlined with the same fabric trims. This lamp shade is lined with white fabric.

This lamp carries one standard small screw light bulb (E14) up to 60 Watts. At present fitted with a Candle Clear light bulb of 25 Watts, as photographed, which is included in the price. It could also take other types of E14 bulb.

This vintage lamp is in very good condition. The ceramic figurine is sound with no chips or damages with minor tiny marks & some vintage patina in line with age & wear. The fabric shade is in very good condition with no cuts or stains, only tiny marks and a light patina in line with age & wear.

Packing is offered free of charge. We take special professional care with packing. For safe transport the shade will be wrapped separately in bubble wrap, foam and an outer layer of card. The base will also be wrapped separately in bubble wrap, foam & card. Together these pieces would easily fit into a box with loose fill packing suitable for posting with a courier. We ship with reliable couriers (signed for, tracked & insured).

BESWICK POTTERY HISTORY

Beswick was an English pottery manufacturer, founded in 1894 by James Wright and his sons John and Gilbert in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent. It was not until the 1930`s, and specifically the introduction of a high fired bone china in 1934, that the firm turned to the animal modelling for which they would become known for. In 1969, the business was sold to Doulton & Co. Ltd. The factory closed in 2002 and the brand John Beswick was sold in 2004.
