Benny Motzfeldt glass vase signed `BM 79`, 1979 Norwegian.

This vintage glass vase has been thoroughly cleaned and is in excellent condition.

The freeform shape & encased weave fabric in this design are iconic features of the work of Norwegian female glass artist Benny Motzfeldt.

Signed & dated from 1979 this vase is an early piece in her career, a time of transition between two major glass companies.

Most intriguing in the Motzfeldt`s technique is the encased swatches of black open weave fabric among clouds of blue, grey & brown along with random bubbles in clear glass.

These design features, quality craftsmanship, substantial size and early date make this piece highly collectable.

Underneath the vase is engraved `BM 79`.

Benny Motzfeldt Biography

Benny Motzfeldt (1909 - 1995) was an important innovator of art glass in Norway. Motzfeldt developed a visual approach, being particularly interested in the potentials colour and light made possible by incorporating various materials in the glass. Initially an engraver with Christiania Glassmagasin in the mid 1950`s Motzfeldt began solo work in 1959. She received international attention for her `souvenir bird` that was purchased in large numbers by the then U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson. In the years from 1967 to 1970 Motzfeldt was the exclusive designer for Randsfjord Glassverk. From 1970 until the early 90`s she worked at the glass workshop at Plus, which included a period when she was artistic director. Her works are represented in the Victoria & Albert Museum and museums in Copenhagen & Stockholm. She was decorated Knight First Class of the Order of St. Olav in 1985 and awarded the Jakob prize and the Swedish Prince Eugen Medal.
