Art Nouveau table lamps, a pair, in gilt bronze, 1900 ca, French
This pair of antique table lamps have been gently cleaned while respecting the age patina. They are newly rewired & earthed, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to use. Each has a new candle lamp holder, bronze tone silk cable, new black cord switch & a new black plug
(UK Plug up to 250V)
. These lamps can be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use these lights in other countries with a light bulb suitable to local electricity.
These antique table lamps were probably made in France around 1900. They are in keeping with the Art Nouveau style flourishing in Paris at the time. They have several distinctive design features:
use of floral and vegetal designs, sinuous curving lines such as the
whiplash line
, and asymmetry.
These lamps have small proportions which is well suited for the bedside or even on a shelf
. With the warm tones, texture & delicate presence, they would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Traditional, Hollywood Regency, or Contemporary.
They are quality cast in gilt bronze with great attention to detail & heavy weight.
The design consist of a round base formed by foliate & flowers, all with great sinuous movement & whiplash lines. The continuous motif raises to the stem of each lamp and is repeated in the bobeche leading to the lampholder.
New candle lampholders have been fitted, but the original antique paper candle tubes have been preserved to keep the original antique character & look.
Both lamps are finished with a new clip-on black silk lampshade. This is lined metallic gold to complement the gilt bronze tones on the lamp. The lampshades are included in the price.
Underneath each lamp base is padded with new black felt to protect the furniture below.
Each lamp carries 1 standard small screw light bulb (E14) up to 40 Watts. At present they are fitted & photographed with Candle Clear shaped light bulbs of 28 Watts. These are included in the price.
These antique lamps are in very good condition for their age. The frames are sound. The antique patina developed over the years has been preserved on the bronze surfaces, and also the candle tubes, with some rubbing to the gilt
& tiny marks in line with age & use.
The 2 lampshades are new and in very good condition.
Packing is offered free of charge. We take special professional care while packing. For safe transport the bases & lampshades would be wrapped separately in bubble wrap, foam and an outer layer of card. Together these parts would easily fit into a box with loose fill packing nuts, safe for posting with a courier.

ART NOUVEAU IN PARIS FRANCE HISTORY
The Art Nouveau movement of architecture and design had first
appeared in Brussels, in houses completed in 1893 by
Victor Horta and
Henry van de Velde, flourishing in Paris from about 1890 to 1914. It reached its high point at the 1
900 Paris International Exposition, with the Art Nouveau metro stations designed by
Hector Guimard. It was characterized by a rejection of historicism and traditional architectural forms, and a flamboyant use of floral and vegetal designs, sinuous curving lines such as the
whiplash line, and asymmetry. It was most prominent in architecture, appearing in numerous types of buildings, and in the decorative arts, particularly glassware, furniture, lighting and jewellery. It spread quickly to other countries, but lost favor after 1910 and came to an end with the First World War.
