This vintage table lamp has been gently cleaned while respecting the age patina. It is newly rewired & earthed, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to use. It has a new silver metal lamp holder, new grey silk cable, new black cord switch & new black plug (UK Plug up to 250V). This lamp can be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use this light in other countries with a light bulb suitable to local electricity.

This original vintage Art Deco lamp has been made by renown English silversmiths Roberts & Belk around the 1920`s/1930`s. The firm had a long reputable history making quality silver & silver plated objects. They were involved in furnishing the ocean liner Queen Mary in 1936 in the Art Deco style.

The lamp is marked inside the base R & B with the Aladdin lamp trade mark plus stamped the item number 8821. The "Romney Plate Sheffield Made" mark is stamped on the outside. 

Timeless with its elegant sculptural geometrical form, modernist lines & delicate proportions. It works well as a desk, entrance, table or bedside lamp. It would make an elegant & glamorous addition to a range of interiors such as Art Deco, Traditional, Mid-Century, Hollywood Regency, or Contemporary.

Looking from the bottom, the modernist geometric design has a plain panelled octagonal form onto a spreading octagonal foot, with Queen Anne style influences. The silver plated base sits on the original octagonal black painted wood base.

Underneath the lamp base is padded with new black felt to protect the furniture below.

The lamp`s body elongates from the foot in a fluted form, repeating the geometric octagonal pattern, adding multiple reflections, with pierced decoration along the sides towards the top end. An octagonal domed cover with concave panels  leads to the neck and the lampholder.

A new silver tone metal lampholder with cover has been fitted, complementing the overall look of the lamp. Two removable silver metal rings secure the lampshade.

This lamp is finished with a quality vintage screw on lampshade of exceptional quality & great presence, probably from the 1940`s/50`s, which is a work of art on its own. A sculptural shade made of 4 convex & 4 concave alternating panels, complementing the octagonal shape of the silver plated base. Made of parchment textured paper simulating marble, with gold dust applied on the wrinkles/veins. A silver metal effect trim is present on the convex sides. Beige & greige tone silk trims are applied around the edges.

This lamp carries 1 standard small screw light bulb (E14) up to 60 Watts. At present it is fitted & photographed with a Candle Clear shaped light bulb of 28 Watts which is included in the price. It could take any other E14 bulb types.

The lampshade alone has the following dimensions: Height: 25.5cm, Diameter at the top: 25 cm, Diameter at the bottom: 29.5 cm

Packing is offered free of charge. We take special professional care while packing. For safe transport the base would be wrapped separately from the shade, both in bubble wrap, foam and an outer layer of card. Together these parts would easily fit into a box with loose fill packing nuts, safe for posting with a courier. We ship with reliable couriers (signed for, tracked & insured).

ROBERTS & BELK SILVERSMITHS HISTORY & THE QUEEN MARY OCEAN LINER

The firm was established in Sheffield, England, in 1809 as Furnyss, Pole & Turner and from 1823 traded as William Briggs. The first hallmark was entered in the Sheffield Assay Office as "plate worker, Furnival Street, Sheffield" in 1810, focusing in manufacturing silver and EPNS holloware, flatware and cutlery. Their trade mark being the Aladdin`s lamp.  From 1858 managed by William Briggs and Samuel Roberts named Roberts & Briggs. In 1863 Roberts continued the business in partnership with Charles Belk under the name Roberts & Belk. The firm used the trademark ROMNEY PLATE and SYLFERET. In 1879, after the retirement of Samuel Roberts, the activity continued solely under Charles Belk.  Besides the Sheffield factory, the company was active also in London, with showrooms at 28 Ely Place, Holborn (1858) and later at Gresham House, 24 Holborn Viaduct (1883).  In 1901 the firm became Roberts & Belk Ltd.  During WWI Roberts and Belk manufactured electro-tinned spoons to export to the troops.

 

The Queen Mary was first launched in 1934. A number of important artists, designers and manufacturers were involved in furnishing the luxury ocean liner, which was completed in 1936. 

In 1961 the firm was bought by C.J. Vander Ltd.
