Antique pair of Victorian silver plate candlestick table lamps by Collis & Co. Birmingham, 1860`s ca, English.

This pair of antique lamps have been gently cleaned while respecting the aged patina. They are newly rewired, earthed, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to use. Each has the following new components: lamp holder with a cream card cover, silver silk cable, white cord switch, white plug (UK Plug up to 250V) & clip on silk lampshade. Lightbulbs included. These lamps can be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use these lights in other countries with a light bulb suitable to local electricity.

Presented here is a fine quality pair of silver plated antique English candlesticks dating to around 1850 -1875 (mid Victorian period), converted into lamps. They are both stamped along the bottom side of the base with the maker`s mark: "Collis & Co", plus the plating method: "EPNS" (Electro Plated Nickel Silver) in gothic letters, plus the quality mark inside a shield: "A1" which is the highest plating standard offered by the maker (extra heavy plate). The place of manufacture "BIRMINGHAM" is also stamped along the base.

The simple elegant organic form & delicate proportions make these lamps well proportioned for a bedside, sideboard, side table or mantelpiece. These pieces combine Victorian craftsmanship with modern usability, making them ideal as statement lighting for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
They would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Art Deco, Traditional, Country, Hollywood Regency, or Contemporary.

Each candlestick rests on a circular base divided into six radiating segments, shaped like stylised petals, which create a striking floral effect. The base is edged with stepped moulding, giving weight and balance to the design.  The round base is weighted, making them very stable. The bottom of each base has new black felt to protect the furniture below.

Rising from this foundation, the stem takes a graceful baluster form with gentle knops and tapering contours, leading to the drip pan and sconce.  Above the sconce, a new lamp holder covered by a new tall cream card candle tube elongates the proportions of the lamp.

Both lamps are finished with quality new clip-on cream silk candle lampshades. The shade is tapered and has wide pleat detailing, complete with a crepe trim top & bottom. It is lined in the same colour which enhances the glow of light. These lampshades are included in the price.

Each lamp carries 1 standard small screw light bulb (E14) up to 40 Watts. At present they are fitted & photographed with new LED dimmable Candle Clear shaped light bulbs of 40 Watts. These are included in the price.

These antique lamps are in very good condition for their age. The frames are sound with no damages or broken parts. The metal surfaces overall are in very good condition with the original antique patina preserved. There are minor subtle superficial marks & rubbing to the silver finish in places, all in line with age & wear and adding character. The lampshades are new and in very good condition.

GEORGE RICHMOND COLLIS & Co SILVERSMITH HISTORY

Collis & Co was a leading Birmingham English silversmith and electroplating firm founded by George Richmond Collis (1794–1881). Around 1835 he acquired John Thomason’s established business and soon built a reputation for both sterling silver and the newly developed electroplate. Trading as G. R. Collis & Co, the firm registered marks at the Birmingham Assay Office and maintained London showrooms on Regent Street, serving a fashionable clientele.

By the 1840s–1870s Collis was producing a wide range of silver and plated wares, from tea services and candlesticks to jewellery and presentation pieces. The Company was quick to embrace electroplating, stamping wares with pseudo-hallmarks and quality marks such as “A1” to denote superb heavy plating.

In the early 1880`s the business was absorbed into Carrington & Co, London jewellers, later appointed to the Royal Family. Today, Collis & Co remains valued for its fine quality workmanship and as a hallmark of Birmingham’s 19th Century silver trade.
