Antique candlestick lamps Christofle, a pair, silver plate,1905, French
This pair of table lamps have been gently cleaned while respecting the antique patina. They are newly rewired & earthed, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to use. Each has a new lamp holder, new cream card tube, new grey silk cable, new black cord switch & new black plug. These lamps can be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use these lights in other countries with a light bulb suitable to local electricity.
Both table lamps are stamped
on the side of the base `Christofle`, along with a cartouche with the balance stamp and a bee hovering under 3 stars framed by the two Cs that stood for `Charles Christofle`. The number 5 is also stamped, suggesting these candle sticks were produced in 1905.
This pair of antique candlesticks have been thoughtfully adapted into electric lights.
The slender form and elegant proportions make them well suited for the bedside or corridor. They would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Traditional, Hollywood Regency, Post Modern, Industrial or Contemporary.
The design consist of a
baluster
stem in silver plated on brass. This leads to shoulder & sconce in which sits the new lampholder covered by a removable new cream card candle tube.
Looking towards the bottom the base is circular with a stepped edge.
The candlestick surface is engraved with a swirling pattern & small flowers creating movement & texture. The original antique patina on these candlesticks has been preserved. The silver plate has been gently rubbed over the years to expose the brass underneath, the result adds interest to the pattern and gentle golden tone in places.
Both lamps are finished with a new clip-on grey silk lampshade. This is lined metallic gold to complement the underlying brass metal tones of the base.
Underneath each lamp base is padded with new black felt to protect the furniture below.
Each lamp carries 1 standard small screw light bulb (E14) up to 40 Watts. At present they are fitted & photographed with Candle Clear shaped light bulbs of 25 Watts. These are included in the price.
These antique lamps are in good original condition. The frames are sound. The antique age patina & gentle rubbing to the silver plate surfaces has been preserved, adding character and interesting tones achieved over time.
Packing is offered free of charge. We take special professional care while packing. For safe transport the bases & lampshades would be wrapped separately in bubble wrap, foam and an outer layer of card. Together these parts would easily fit into a box with loose fill packing nuts, safe for posting with a courier.

CHRISTOFLE SILVER PLATE HISTORY
In 1830
Charles Christofle (1805-1863) set up a jewellery & metal workshop business in the Marais district of Paris. It was in 1842 that he transformed the business after securing the patent of silver plating in France from the famous English
innovator
Elkington`s. Christofle not only created high-quality plated goods but also added a range of solid silverware. The company expanded in the luxury market from then onwards, mostly because of the high craftsmanship and quality. The economic depression following World War One, together with some unfortunate management of the brand at the time, meant Christofle lost their factory in Germany and almost faced financial ruin. At that point, Charles Christofle’s great-grandnephew Tony Bouilhet took over the management of the business and revived the brand. Tony was married to wealthy Carla Borletti, whose family invested into the Christofle business becoming major shareholders of the brand.
Alongside the much needed capital, Carla was interested in Art Deco designs, commissioning great designers, architects and sculptors to create pieces for Christofle. These new Modernist designs propelled the business forward leading to the opening of more Christofle boutiques and shops within department stores. The company is still operating today and was bought in 2012 by one of its shareholders, to Chalhoub family.
