Antique brass umbrella stand (antique
brass grape hod) from the Arts & Crafts period of about 1890 ca, French.
This item has been gently cleaned while respecting the antique patina and is ready to use.
A brass grape hod of amazing quality embossed with foliage & vine patterns on solid polished brass. It would work well as a umbrella & stick stand or for kindling.
The design consists of a large sculptural piece in solid polished brass, tapered and bowed front & back.
In this example the quality embossing has been hammered from behind so that the decoration is lifted from its surrounding. The mix of both embossing & engraving creates areas of high contrast & reflection. The patterns of foliage & grape vines are interpreted with organic continuous lines characteristic of the Arts & Crafts period. This decoration is present in the main frontal section of the stand and on the inside of the raised back.
Towards the bottom, there is a decoration with lines and arches which emphasizes the vertical shape of the piece.
The base is flared making it very stable. This shape is emphasized by the decoration of embossed circles.
The edges are finished with tubular brass banding, most pronounced at the opening.
This antique piece is in very good condition. The brass has a gently aged patina and minor marks in line with age. The back surface is a continuation in solid brass like the front, left unpolished which has aged over the years.
Packing is offered free of charge. We take special professional care in packing. For safe transport this piece would be bubble wrapped & put into a box with loose fill packing peanuts ideal for posting.
