This antique wall mirror was made in the Aesthetic Movement style which flourished in Britain between 1860-1900. The sophisticated design was intended to bring beauty to everyday objects, escaping the ugliness & materialism of the Industrial Age. The geometric design has a contemporary feel and is a departure from the traditional ornate antique frame. It can be hanged portrait or landscape.
The contrast between the wood & silver reflective surface, round & square shapes, traditional & geometric motifs, make this mirror a good example of The Aesthetic Movement style. Aesthetic artists drew inspiration from various cultures & periods, in this example from ancient Greek Art, with the decorative sunflower pattern on the wood. The sunflower symbolizes lasting happiness and adoration, key principles of Aestheticism. The true faith and loyalty to something that is much bigger and brighter than themselves. It relates to self-respect, which means being authentic and embracing your own individuality. The simple geometric design & elegant proportions make this piece well sized for any room. It would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Arts & Crafts, Traditional, Hollywood Regency or Contemporary.
The design consists of a handmade rectangular solid wooden frame in mahogany. The tone of the wood is uniform with multiple carvings creating great texture & movement. This is accentuated with the external & internal trim making use of various geometric
patterns. The chamfered stepped wooden frame has two concave portions at either side of a central beaded trim. The decorative accent is on the flat square corners, each with a carved sunflower. A final slender trim surrounds the mirror surface. The latter reflects in the mirror creating the illusion of depth.
The antique silver mirror insert is original to the piece and securely held in place behind the frame. It is fully reflective & bevelled, creating a tridimensional effect when on the wall.
The back of the mirror is covered with an extra wooden plate adding weight & stability to the piece plus creating depth as slightly raises the front portion of the frame from the wall. Quality handmade with great attention to detail, such as the metal corrugated fasteners holding the joints.
There are remains of the original maker`s paper label & owner`s name on the back of the frame. To hang the mirror portrait on the wall there is a fitted metal plate with a hole. If preferred, there are also present two small metal hooks to run a wire to hang it landscape.
This antique wall mirror is in good condition for its age. The antique patina has been preserved. The original mirror surface is reflective and in good condition, with no cracks or chips. The mirror has some `misty` foxing in small areas and superficial marks in line with age. The frame is sound with tight joints. The wooden surfaces in very good condition with no loses and minor marks & rubbing as expected for an antique piece.

Packing is offered free of charge. We take special professional care with packing. For safe transport the mirror will be wrapped in bubble wrap, foam and an outer layer of card. AESTHETIC MOVEMENT HISTORY
The Aesthetic Movement in Britain covered the period of 1860 to 1900. Artists designed to escape the Industrial Revolution Age, by concentrating instead on producing art that was beautiful rather than having a deeper meaning: `Art for Art`s sake`. These new bohemian Aesthetic artists included Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones, Christopher Dresser & Frederic Leighton.
The Aesthetic Movement initiated extensive artistic & design changes. Its eclecticism, modern concepts of middle-class lifestyle and domestic environment prepared the way for the art movements of the 20th Century, resonating even into our own time.
